It is important to visit the mansions of the island, buildings over 200 years old, of which the mansions of Pavlos and Lazaros Kountouriotis, Tombazi, Tsamadou, Kriezi, Bulgari, Mpountouri stand out…

Definitely the Historical Archive-Museum of Hydra, which operates daily and displays important museum relics, archival material and a library with valuable publications.

Also visit the Church of the Dormition (17th century) with the Ecclesiastical and Byzantine Museum which is located right in the center of the port and is the Cathedral of Hydra. It is distinguished by the large clock in its high bell tower, which announces major religious events.

Finally, you must visit the historical house of Lazaros Kountouriotis, which houses a branch of the National Historical Museum, the house of Georgios Kountouriotis, which houses the Museum of Post-Byzantine Art and History of Hydra, the house of Emmanuel Tombazis and Xanthi Sahini, which houses a branch of the School of Fine Arts and the “Melina Merkouri” Art and Concert Hall of the Municipality of Hydra, which hosts works by famous artists throughout the year.

It is worth gazing at the harbor from the hill, admiring the sunset from the Periptero and from the Spilia, but also visiting the 6 Monasteries and 300 Churches of the island.

Especially to visit, at an altitude of 500 meters in the area of Eros, the twin monasteries of Agia Eupraxia and Prophet Ilias where in 1825 Kolokotronis and other fighters were imprisoned for a while, the Monastery of Agia Triada, Agia Matrona, Agios Nikolaos and Theotokou of Zourva, located in the easternmost part of the island.

Also the Churches of Ypapanti and Ai-Yiannis the Faster with the wonderful frescoes of the 18th century and the beautiful domes supported by marble arches.

Finally, visit the Church of Agios Konstantinos of Hydraios at the top of the hill of Kiafa with wooden carvings and a gilded iconostasis, built on the site where the home of the Saint of the same name used to be.
