The coastal road that goes to Mandraki branches off at Mandraki and goes up towards the women’s Monastery of Ag. Nikolaou , of the 17th century.
After the quay where the ships catch, the first road, on the left, leads to the Stadium and then to the pine-covered area of the Monastery of Agia Fotini.
Starting from the monastery of Agia Fotini, we follow the dirt path and after a while we come across the “Milo“, a stone building of the 18th century, which was a wheat processing plant. At this point the road splits into two paths, which lead to the Monasteries of Agia Matrona and Agia Triada.
The road that starts from the middle of the port, Miaouli Street, passes by Admiral N. Botsi Square, the smallest square of the Five Prime Ministers with their monument and leads to Kala Pigadia. The name of the district is due to the two wells, built in 1803 under the administration of Georgios Bulgaris, that exist there and supplied water to the city’s inhabitants for more than 200 years.
From Kala Pigadia the uphill road continues and leads to the hill of Kiafa. At the top of the hill rises the Church of Agios Konstantinos from Hydra, built on the site where the house of the Saint was.
Going up to Kiafa you can see the mansion of Lazaros Kountouriotis, the old Shaktourio Gymnasium which is an art space and the church of Ypapanti from 1780 with an impressive wood-carved iconostasis.
In Kiafa there are also the old Church of Ai Giannis the Faster, with its wonderful frescoes from the 17th century, which is considered one of the oldest on the island, and the church of Agia Paraskevi.
From Kiafa, the uphill path that climbs the mountain leads to the Monastery of the prophet Elias, where Kolokotronis was imprisoned for a while, and to the women’s Monastery of Agia Eupraxia. From here the visitor can enjoy the view that reaches from the city and the port of Hydra, to the opposite Peloponnesian coast.
Continuing, you will climb the hill of Agios Athanasios and the mills. From the highest point, Hydra unfolds in front of you in every detail. The 7 half-demolished today windmills were used for the manufacture of gunpowder.
